About the Monroe County Solid Waste Management District
The District is a multifaceted service organization with five locations that educate and provide programs to the citizens of Monroe County to ensure that recyclables and trash are handled in an environmentally safe and socially and economically responsible manner. Education
Education is necessary so that our services and programs are used to their fullest. Our educational offerings are comprehensive and presentations are adapted to all ages, schools and community groups, and can be held at your location or in our Education Room. Schedule a tour of our facilities and see first hand how our programs work.
Central Recycling & Reuse
Our Central Recycling and Reuse Facility accepts all material for recycling. We have a recycling box for everything. Teachers and non-profits enjoy our Reuse Center for art and education projects. The Reuse Sidewalk is a place to exchange clothing, shoes, and useful household goods.
Rural Recycling & Solid Waste Stations
We have four Rural Recycling and Solid Waste Stations that are strategically located in Monroe County for your recycling and trash disposal needs. No fee or bag is required for recycling but you have to purchase an orange bag to disposal of your trash. Visit the trading posts at each of the four facilities to exchange useful household goods.
Hazardous Materials
The Hazardous Materials Facility is your place for recycling, reuse, and proper disposal of your hazardous materials. Electronics, Freon appliances, pharmaceuticals, medical aids, paints, cleaners, and other common substances are hazardous waste that can pollute our soil, water, and air.
Green Business Network
The Green Business Network helps businesses take strides in environmental stewardship by implementing environmentally sound business operations. Become a Green Business Network member by either delivering your recyclables to any of the recycling facilities or by joining our collection service route.
The Orange Bag Program
This pay-as-you throw program is for Monroe County residents who do not have the City’s curbside pick-up service or who do not use a private trash hauler. Simply purchase orange bags, fill them with trash (not recyclables) and take them to a Recycling and Solid Waste Station. (Remember there is no charge to recycle.)
Adopt A Road
Adopting a road gives you membership in one of the fastest growing volunteer organizations dedicated to keeping Monroe County clean and beautiful. Becoming a volunteer means you will join forces with over three hundred concerned and caring citizens who are committed to eradicating established litter patterns. Clean roads enhance the beauty of our environment, discourage future littering, and improve community morale.
Yard Waste
The District does not accept yard waste but we can tell you who does.
Environmental Compliance & Safety
Illegal Dumping is disposal of waste in an unpermitted area. Illegally dumped wastes are dumped to avoid either disposal fees or the time and effort required for proper disposal. We have an effective illegal dumping program. Our process is simple: INVESTIGATE, REMEDIATE, LITIGATE.
